Barbados Travel Tips
Why Visit Barbados
Although Barbados may be considered small at 169 square miles, this South East Caribbean island certainly lives up to its name of being the Gem of the Caribbean. Enriched and overflowing with history, culture and natural beauty. Barbados offers travellers a bit of everything. Enjoy the natural wonders, lively nightlife, breathtaking beaches or indulge in the local cuisine and of course not forgetting the rum……taste the best rum from the birthplace of rum itself.
Weather
Barbados is blessed all year round with glorious sunshine as the average daily temperature doesn’t fall below 30c. However, there is two seasons, the “rainy season” which falls within the months of June and November and the “dry season” from December through to May.
The rainy season brings with it intermittent rain fall causing an increase in humidity, but it offers some real benefits too ! There are great offers and deals on accommodation, activities and restaurants during this time plus the carnival festivities are in full swing.
The “dry season” in turn welcomes more trade winds along with clear skies and uninterrupted sunshine. This season is the busiest season and is the most popular time to travel to Barbados for many people as they escape the harsh Winters of home.
Clothing & Cosmetics
The island offers a laid back vibe and due to the soaring temperatures light clothing is a must. Swimwear, cover ups, shorts, t-shirts, shirts, dresses and flip flops are all you need. Be mindful of the powerful sun even on overcast days, sunscreen and a hat is essential. But be sure to check the individual dress codes for restaurants as each have there own requirements. Any form of camouflage print clothing is not permitted on island.
As Barbados is a tropical island where mosquitos are common don’t forget to travel with your insect repellant.
Currency
The currency of Barbados is the Barbadian dollar, however, US dollars are widely accepted across the island with a fixed exchange rate at $1.98 BBD to $1.00 USD. Most establishments will provide prices in both currencies but please note that change will always be given in Barbados Dollars.
Currency exchange can be facilitated at Front Desk, for larger amounts you will need to visit a Bank.
Tipping Etiquette
A service charge between 10%-15% is typically added to most bills in restaurants and hotels with tipping thereafter at your discretion.
Driving, Taxis and Public Transport
There are a few different ways of getting around the island which will meet everyone’s budget.
Rental cars offer great flexibility with your schedule, these can be booked in advance or we can assist you here at Southern Palms with your booking. Just remember that Barbados drive on the left !
Taxis are readily available in the arrivals hall of the Grantley Adams International Airport with fares across the island being set by the Government. Likewise, if you need a taxi whilst staying in house with us we can arrange this for you.
For the budget friendly, public transport is widely available from the main coast road which is a short walk from Southern Palms. Blue buses are owned by the Government, whilst the smaller yellow buses and white vans marked ZR are privately owned and generally cost $3.50 BBD per route.
Entry Requirements
All visitors must have a valid passport for the duration of their stay along with a valid return ticket to enter the island. Most countries do not require a visa to visit Barbados but please do verify that one is not needed for your country.
